Bio:

My name is Richard, and I moved to Hoddesdon with my partner, Kate, a little over eight years ago. Our little boy, Jem, started in reception at St. Catherine’s in September 2024 and he is having a fabulous time—he’s particularly excited to be receiving a new book every week! I am Chair of the Board of Trustees for Brent Symphony Orchestra and Vice President of Technology for a small artificial intelligence software company based in London. Through my work with the Orchestra, I have gained valuable governance experience, including fundraising challenges, setting strategic goals, and walking that delicate line between holding a leadership team to account and stepping on their toes. I have extensive experience in assessing and managing budgets and human resources through my professional work. I do not have a background in education. However, in my twenties, I taught a few young children to play the trumpet (I’ve played since I was 7), which was a great experience. I am still in touch with some of them now (my 20s were quite a long time ago!). Through my professional and volunteer positions, I have worked with many leadership teams. While I have always brought something unique to the table (otherwise, I wouldn’t be in the post), seeing how other people work together is always extremely valuable. I am sure I can take inspiration from Mrs. Marlow and her team, which will help my personal growth and mean I can perform better in my other roles. My motivation for applying to the role of Governor is twofold. Firstly, I have always enjoyed giving back to the community. Whilst the Orchestra has been a thoroughly rewarding experience, I have been in that role for nearly 20 years. I want to bring that contribution closer to home. Secondly, I did not have a nice time at school, to the point that I was quite nervous when visiting establishments that Jem might attend. St Catherine’s calmness and welcoming feeling stayed with Kate and me, and we’re delighted that Jem’s application was successful. If I can help support this school in any way to continue the fantastic work it is doing, be it as a Governor or otherwise, I will be delighted to do so.
